Pulitzer Center Launches Your Work/Environment Initiative
On Wednesday, March 30, 2022, the Pulitzer Center and a panel of climate change experts participated in a virtual conversation about Your Work/Environment, a new Pulitzer Center initiative that supports reporting on climate change and its impact on workers and the workplace. Grants will be awarded to journalists exploring the global climate risks playing out in fields and on factory floors.
Attendees at the Your Work/Environment session learned about jobs and employment sectors, factory practices, and manufacturing that are threatened or face change. The panelists discussed how climate change has been covered in the media and responded to questions about what is missing from the reporting landscape.
In addition, results from the Pulitzer Center's research into workplace environmental issues, included in the report "Climate Change and Labor: The Media Landscape," were also presented at the Your Work/Environment session.
The session's panelists included:
- Phaedra Pezzullo, associate professor of communication and media studies at the University of Colorado, Boulder.
- Marielle Ramires, communicator with Mídia Ninja in Brazil. Mídia Ninja is a decentralized network of communicators seeking new opportunities for production and distribution of information.
- Farhana Sultana, associate professor of geography and environment at Syracuse University.
- Thanee Degasperi, network manager at Mídia Ninja.
- Jon Sawyer, the Pulitzer Center's executive director.
- Christine Spolar, the Pulitzer Center's climate and labor editor.
- Flora Pereira, rainforest outreach and education manager at the Pulitzer Center.
The Pulitzer Center encourages freelance and staff journalists with ambitious enterprise and strong in-depth reporting ideas to apply for the Your Work/Environment grants.
