Gavkhouni located in central Iran, Isfahan Province, is the terminal basin of the Zayandeh River. Gavkhouni is a salt marsh that is completely dried up during last 10 years. Drought and diversion of water from Zayandeh River for agricultural use are two causes. Gavkhouni receives pollution from Esfahan with a population over 1.5 million and pesticides and fertilizers from farms around. Disappearance of the wetlands will result in severe polluted salt storms that can pose a serious health hazard such as lounge cancer for surrounding people. Image by Ako Salemi. Iran, 2016.

This week, photographer Ako Salemi is taking over Pulitzer Center's Instagram account. He will be sharing photos from his Persephone Miel Fellowship project, "Climate Change in Iran."

For this project, Salemi traveled through Iran to capture the effects of climate change. Some of these photos were published in TIME, The New Yorker, and Vox. Follow his posts on the Pulitzer Center's Instagram account.
