On June 17, 2019, the winners of the One World Media Awards were announced at a ceremony held at BAFTA. Pulitzer Center grantee Marc Ellison received the Digital Media Award for his story “How Nigeria’s Fear of Child ‘Witchcraft’ Ruins Young Lives” published by Al Jazeera.

This story uses highly detailed illustrations and photographs to document the fates of children accused of witchcraft in Nigeria. Although the belief in witchcraft has long been central to Nigerian culture, the latest stigmatization is a relatively recently phenomenon, fueled in part by the country’s ‘Nollywood’ movie industry.

The One World Media Awards were established in 1988. They recognize the best media coverage of developing countries, reflecting the social, political, and cultural life of people around the globe. They give awards in 15 categories that highlight work from all media platforms and several genres and themes.
