The remote Canadian First Nations Community of Attawapiskat, Ontario, in Canada, declared a state of emergency in April 2016 due to an alarming rate of attempted suicide among its approximately 2,000 residents. Photojournalist David Maurice Smith worked in Attawapiskat to document the community so the complex causes behind the crisis could be understood in a cultural context.
