Pulitzer Center grantee Eli Kintisch traveled to Greenland to learn about the changing ice sheet. It has long deposited icebergs from its edges; now it is melting from its top, creating an unexpected habitat for microbes on its surface as the melting accelerates. Kintisch also reported from an archeological dig in southern Greenland for a story about our changing conception of the Norse colonists who lived there for five centuries before mysteriously vanishing in the 15th century. Here Kintisch describes the transformation remaking the Arctic, the fastest changing landscape on the planet.
