Two decades after the Sandinista Front for National Liberation (FSLN) first came to the fore in Nicaragua, its leader, Daniel Ortega, is back in power. While he has declared his rule the second phase of the Sandinista revolution – a democratic, socialist, and Christian Nicaragua – the country struggles to maintain democracy. Ortega controls all four branches of government and has undermined constitutional checks and balances, resulting in his controversial re-election last November.

Tim Rogers has been evaluating whether the country has finally found its own path towards development based on social justice, or if Nicaragua is simply repeating the past.
