Pulitzer Center grantees Malia Politzer and Emily Kassie spent nearly two months in the field for the Huffington Post Highline piece "The 21st Century Gold Rush." From interviewing smugglers in an outpost on the edge of the Saharan desert in Niger, to small-time drug dealers and anti-mafia prosecutors in Sicily, to child workers in Istanbul and large corporations in Germany, the team reported on the individuals and companies profiting off the refugee crisis.

In this "Meet the Journalist" video, Malia and Emily explain how they came up with the reporting idea, picked the locations, and planned their reporting for this ambitious, award-winning story.
