Pulitzer Center AI Accountability Fellow and author of The Algorithm, Hilke Schellmann, will visit Benedictine University on April 17, 2024. She will meet informally with students, visit classes, and deliver a keynote lecture.

Schellman, who is an Emmy Award-winning professor at New York University, reported Are AI Hiring Tools Racist and Ableist? with the support of the Pulitzer Center. Her investigation, published in The Guardian, uncovered that common image recognition algorithms regularly categorized images of women as sexually explicit when compared to a comparable dataset containing images of men. These labels often led to blocks or bans on popular websites.
