Pulitzer Center Senior Editor Tom Hundley speaks on Tuesday, October 14, during a panel discussion about journalist safety in hostile environments.

"The Threats and Costs to Getting the Facts: A Review of Journalism Safety" is sponsored by United Nations Association-National Capital Area's (UNA-NCA) Peace and Security Committee, in collaboration with the Pulitzer Center and the National Education Association. The panel offers first-hand perspectives from journalists who have reported from crisis zones or regions hostile to freedom of information and reviews techniques that help keep journalists safe when reporting around the world.

Hundley will be joined on the panel by George Papagiannis, external relations and information officer at UNESCO's Washington Liason Office, and Mesfin Erko, former radio journalist and torture survivor now with the Torture Abolition and Survivor Support Coalition.

Before joining the Pulitzer Center, Hundley was a newspaper journalist for 36 years, including nearly two decades as a foreign correspondent for the Chicago Tribune. He also has reported for GlobalPost. In addition to the years overseas, Hundley has spent time at U.S. newspapers large and small, from the Middletown (NY) Times-Herald Record and the Bergen Record in New Jersey to the Detroit Free Press in Michigan. His work has won numerous journalism awards. Most recently, Hundley has been working on a long-term reporting project dealing with reproductive rights in Indonesia and the Philippines.
