How to Hold AI Accountable event with Hilke Schellmann at Flagler College

Journalist Hilke Schellmann shares her expertise on artificial intelligence and the world of work during the Pulitzer Center’s annual participation in the Flagler College Forum on Government and Public Policy.

Schellmann is a 2022 Pulitzer Center AI Accountability fellow, an Emmy-winning investigative reporter and journalism professor at NYU. She has reported for HBO, NPR, The New York Times, The Guardian, and The Wall Street Journal, where she has led a team investigating how artificial intelligence is changing our lives.

Schellmann’s book, The Algorithm: How AI Decides Who Gets Hired, Monitored, Promoted and Fired and Why We Need to Fight Back Now, was released in January 2024. Her publisher, Hachette, notes that Schellmann “delivers a shocking and illuminating exposé on one of the most pressing civil rights issues of our time: how AI has quietly, and mostly out of sight, taken over the world of work.”

The Algorithm tells an even bigger story with Schellmann discovering faulty algorithms and systemic discrimination of women and people of color, which may have already harmed thousands of job seekers and employees,” the publisher writes.

In her book, Schellmann explores how society builds algorithmic tools and what protections should be put in place.

Previously, the Pulitzer Center supported Schellmann and Habiba Nosheen's PBS FRONTLINE documentary, "Outlawed in Pakistan." The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, where The Los Angeles Times dubbed it "among the standouts." It won an Emmy and Overseas Press Club and Cinema for Peace awards.

For more than 30 years, the Flagler College Forum on Government and Public Policy has invited nationally-recognized journalists and commentators to St. Augustine, Florida, to discuss issues of importance in regional, state, and federal governments.

Schellmann’s Flagler Forum lecture is organized as part of the Pulitzer Center’s Campus Consortium partnership with Flagler College. In addition to her March 7 lecture, Schellmann plans to meet with faculty and students at Flagler during her visit.
