Pulitzer Center grantee Ameto Akpe will discuss accountability, transparency and the management of Nigeria's water sector at a day-long conference held by the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. As part of Pulitzer Center's collaborative reporting initiative in West Africa on accountability in the water sector, Akpe investigated the root causes of water shortage in Nigeria for her project "Nigeria's Water and Sanitation Sector: Leaks and Plugs."

Below is the introduction to the conference provided by the Wilson Center:

Nigeria plays a leading role in Africa's economic and political future. Yet media coverage and policy debates outside Nigeria rarely go beyond covering the latest crisis. This conference will go behind the headlines to better understand key challenges and opportunities for the country, its neighbors and the international community. These commonly neglected areas include the demographic, health, environmental, and governance contexts. Bringing together experts from a diversity of disciplines and policy areas, this day-long session will delve into these often overlooked foundations of Nigeria's future.
