When a Filipino woman leaves her home to work overseas as a nanny, she knows that it will be years...
Every year thousands of women leave the Philippines to work abroad, from France to the United Arab Emirates, as domestic workers (mostly nannies and cleaning women). In her project Who Takes Care of Nanny's Children, Pulitzer Center-supported journalist Ana Santos introduces us to these women who say goodbye to their families for years at a time in the hope of providing a better life for those they leave at home. This simple aspiration comes at a cost that cannot be translated into monetary terms.
Join us on Wednesday, October 29, when Santos discusses her examination into what this situation means for the women and their families. The talk is part of her three-day visit to Campus Consortium partner Elon University.
Santos, the Pulitzer Center's 2014 Persephone Miel fellow, is a print and online journalist whose work has been published in IRIN News, Rappler, Marie Claire (Philippines), among others. She has reported on HIV/AIDS, gender issues, sexual violence and reproductive health rights in Indonesia, Thailand, Jordan, Israel, Papua New Guinea and her home country, the Philippines. Living in one of the most disaster-prone countries in the world, Ana has also begun writing about disaster preparedness and response and the many ways it is interconnected with reproductive health and population.
