"Reportero" Film Screening and Discussion

The Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, in partnership with the Woodrow Wilson Center's Mexico Institute, presents "Reportero," a documentary directed and produced by Bernardo Ruiz that explores the issue of free press and journalist security in the midst of Mexico's cartel-related violence. A discussion follows featuring Ruiz and international journalists including Pulitzer Center Senior Editor Tom Hundley.

With more than 40 journalists killed in Mexico since 2006, being a journalist is very dangerous, particularly one undeterred by cartels. "Reportero" follows Sergio Haro, a journalist for the independent paper Zeta in Tijuana, which reports on cartel-related murders and corrupt politicians. As noted by the Woodrow Wilson Center's event description, "The film's fundamental question is, as the drug war intensifies and the risks to journalists become greater, will the free press be silenced?"

In addition to Ruiz and Hundley, the panel discussion following the film includes, Adela Navarro, co-director of Semanario Zeta; and Konstantin Kakaes, former Mexico City bureau chief for The Economist; Dolia Estévez, a senior Mexico correspondent in Washington, DC, and Wilson Center Latin America Program expert; and Eric L. Olson, associate director of the Wilson Center's Mexico Institute. Reception follows the discussion.
