Worcester Art Museum Artist's Talk: Carlos Javier Ortiz On Photographing Gun Violence

Pulitzer Center-supported photographer Carlos Javier Ortiz speaks on Sunday, October 5, at the Worcester Art Museum as part of the "Guns without Borders in Mexico and Central America" exhibit presented in collaboration with the Pulitzer Center.

The Artist Talk is a special opportunity to hear Ortiz speak about his experience documenting the daily cycle of gun violence in Central America. Pulitzer Center Multimedia Projects Coordinator Meghan Dhaliwal will introduce Ortiz.

Working in collaboration with the Pulitzer Center, WAM curated "Guns without Borders in Mexico and Central America" as the first in a series of Pulitzer Center photography exhibits to be paired with WAM's Knights! exhibition. The exhibit runs from March 29-November 9 and features the work of three Pulitzer Center-supported documentary photographers: 12 projected images by Ortiz and by Louie Palu, and eight chromogenic prints by Dominic Bracco II. WAM's Nancy Burns curated the photo exhibit.

Ortiz, Palu and Bracco offer an intimate exploration of the realities that fuel gun violence in Mexico and Guatemala. In addition to confronting viewers with homicide victims, these photographers also present the families left to mourn the dead, the hospitals that attend to the traumatized, and the children who watch helplessly outside their schools. WAM's photographic collaboration with the Pulitzer Center is drawing much-needed media attention to these issues.
