Cyber Security in the Nuclear Sector

Country:

Author:

Stuxnet, the famed computer worm that attacked Iran's nuclear program in 2009-2010, was just the beginning of a new front in computer warfare that exploits vulnerabilities in nuclear facilities.

In the years since Stuxnet, nuclear plants in France and South Korea, among others, have been hit with cyberattacks, often with little explanation from authorities. As these digital threats evolve and multiply, the public is owed a clear account of how governments and nuclear operators are addressing them.

Journalist Sean Lyngaas will report from Vienna, Austria, and other locations in Europe, where the United Nations’ nuclear watchdog is working to shore up the digital defenses of its country members, and computer researchers are hunting for the next Stuxnet.

The convergence of nuclear and cyber threats is an all-too-realistic nightmare that needs more light and attention—and less heat and hyperbole.
