Tasik Chini, the second largest freshwater lake in Malaysia, is showing a pleasant sign of recovery for the local population.

Local residents told Malaysiakini that the lake water was once so clean that it was drinkable, and it served as an important source of sustenance for them.

A few decades ago, deforestation caused degradation and chemical residue from nearby industries reduced the lotus flowers that once bloomed in the Tasik lake.
