On May 28, 2020, The New York Times Magazine was awarded two 2020 Ellie Awards, in the Podcasting and Public Interest categories, for The 1619 Project, a groundbreaking exploration of the legacy of Black Americans starting with the arrival of the first enslaved Africans in 1619.

The Ellie Awards recognize innovative, inspiring, and magazine-quality journalism published in any medium. Founded in 1966, the awards are sponsored by the American Society of Magazine Editors in association with the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.

The Pulitzer Center congratulates Nikole Hannah-Jones and The New York Times Magazine on this recognition.
