The Tragedy of Maternal Mortality in Brazil

Country:

Author:

During the COVID-19 pandemic, maternal mortality in Brazil rose by 89.3%. Since 2019, 53.4% of maternal deaths have been due to COVID infection, according to a study by the Maria Cecilia Souto Vidigal Foundation, in partnership with UNICEF.

This project investigates these tragedies and Brazil's struggling health care system. Traveling to two hard-hit states, journalist Cláudia Collucci reports on COVID-19's impact on maternal mortality and maternal deaths' toll on children and families who are left behind.
