Having had no training or experience in politics, Indigenous mother of three Fabiola Campillai was elected to the Chilean senate in November 2021, with more votes than any other candidate in her district. As she nervously prepares to take office in March 2022, the trial of the policeman who attacked and blinded her begins, during which she is required to provide her testimony. While she struggles to push through legislation which would afford comprehensive reparations to the thousands of other survivors of police brutality, and give voice to the country’s marginalised, we are privy to her inner crisis of confidence and her personal battle for justice. As she is a complete outsider in a sea of predominantly white, male peers, and a victim of caustic attacks from rightwing media and politicians, will Fabiola’s efforts to secure justice succeed in the face of the deep racism, classism, and sexism that pervade Chilean society?
