Pulitzer Center Update December 13, 2022

Amplifying Our Journalism’s Impact

Authors:

We believe the journalism we support deserves to live on far beyond the immediate audiences it reaches through publications and broadcasts. The Pulitzer Center’s outreach engagements in the United States, and around the world, bring the journalism we support to universities, colleges, and public forums.

In the past year, our U.S.-based public programming reached over 11,000 people. Events included those focused on Afghanistan, the war in Ukraine, as well as on religion, gender, and incarceration—including the 10-city End of Isolation Tour, which used immersive theater to underscore both the horror of solitary confinement and the humanity of people subjected to it.

These events help build public awareness and understanding of the issues we cover, inspire journalism-informed action, build trust in journalism, and provide forums for dialogues on complex, and often contentious, topics like climate change,  global health, and the role of journalism in democracy.

Our annual conference, Interconnected: Reporting the Climate Crisis, brought together over 150 journalists, editors, educators, and experts from more than 30 countries, with 3,000 viewers tuning in virtually via Zoom and YouTube. The Center also launched our International Education and Outreach program, focused on connecting students and communities in tropical rainforest regions with urgent issues around deforestation and climate change.

Pulitzer Center rainforest reporting reached nearly 10,000 listeners across the DRC through the radio station of the United Nations Mission. We built the Amazonía Lab, a 5,000-person online community of youth in Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela, and Peru, and worked side by side with influencers and artists in the Mekong region to transform a digital awareness campaign into a major art exhibition in Bangkok.

“I learned thanks to Amazonía Lab that we need to learn to live with the rainforest, learn from its cycles and share my learning with more people.”—Sandra, Amazonía Lab subscriber

We’re eager to connect the amazing journalists we work with to more audiences. We hope you share our excitement to broaden and deepen these opportunities and will support us with a year-end donation.

With gratitude,
