Jane Kang Lawrence

Jane Kang Lawrence received her BFA from Rutgers University. She continued to dovetail art making with teaching by pursuing her Masters in Education from the School of Visual Arts. She has taught visual arts, ceramics, and visual literacy for students in NYC for 16 years. She is a founding director of Peep Space, a contemporary art gallery in Tarrytown, NY and maintains a studio in New York. Bringing the school community together through the arts is essential to her teaching. Through grants, she and her students have created multiple murals throughout NYC public parks. Students of her current high school have also participated in the Inside Out Project, a public arts project initiated by The artist, JR. Most recently, through a grant with the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs (DCLA) and the CreateNYC Language Access Fund and in partnership with ArtsConnection and teaching artist, Pablo Herrera, Jane was able to provide a remote media arts program for high school students who have recently arrived in the U.S. Students acquired the artistic and technical skills needed to create original media arts assignments, and experience artistic risk taking, task persistence, commitment, collaboration and ownership of learning. Jane is also a fellow with the Academy for Teachers (NYC) and an active member of the Mastery Collaborative committee at her school.
