Time, Tide, and Climate Change: The Struggles of Dar es Salaam's Fishermen

Country:

Author:

Up and down the Swahili coast, East Africa's local fishermen are struggling to hang on, as climate change and pollution threaten fish stocks, while booming urban populations increase the demand for affordable food.

On a beach in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania's largest city, a small fishing community faces down a confluence of devastating changes to their environment and way of life. But the root causes of—and the solutions to—these problems are mostly outside the control of small-scale fishermen who are struggling to make a living while the global forces of development spur on climate shifts and hinder attempts to create sustainable fisheries.

Journalist and photographer Paul Stremple reports on this small sliver of coast, a place he's watched change for more than a decade, and speaks to those living on borrowed time where the city meets the sea.
